The National Academy of Engineering (NAE), established in 1964 by the U.S. government, is a nonprofit research organization and one of the four institutions that comprise the "U.S. National Academies," along with the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), founded in 1863 by President Abraham Lincoln. Election to NAE membership is considered the highest professional distinction in the field of engineering. Following this selection, NAE now has 2,487 U.S. members and 336 international members.
To date, 20 individuals from Japan have been elected as international members. From our university, Honorary Professors Yasuharu Suematsu and Kenichi Iga have previously been inducted. With the addition of Specially Appointed Professor / Professor Emeritus Yasufumi Akagi of the Institute of Innovative Research-who was elected at the same time this year-the total from our university has reached four, the highest number in Japan.
